Principal Scientist/Associate Director/Director, Chemistry


Founded in 2016, Foghorn Therapeutics discovers and develops novel drugs to treat cancer and other serious medical disorders. The company seeks to discover novel therapeutics that target chromatin remodeling complexes. Foghorn uses a proprietary platform based on revolutionary advances in mechanistic understanding of disease. 

The successful candidate will play a key leadership role in building and managing Foghorn’s Chemistry function. He/ she will represent Chemistry on cross-functional teams involved in developing strategy, assessing and making go/no-go decisions, as well as serving as Chemistry project leader on selected programs. The person will also be responsible for building and managing a team of internal & external chemists working across multiple programs.

Responsibilities include:

  • Act as a high functioning drug discoverer and influential scientist within Foghorn.
  • Act as chemistry leader within cross-functional project teams to evaluate, prioritize and set strategy to positively influence project direction and timelines.
  • Lead and grow synthetic and medicinal chemistry science and act as a resource and mentor to team members.
  • Build, manage and motivate a small team of internal and external CRO chemists. Drive quality and speed to meet department and company goals.
  • Build strong working relationships with fellow Foghorn colleagues and key external advisors and collaborators.
  • Communicate project updates and make strategic recommendations to Foghorn senior leaders.


  • PhD in Chemistry and approximately 8-12 years industry experience in small molecule medicinal chemistry.
  • Previous experience leading programs at all stages of drug discovery from lead generation through to development candidate nomination. In particular, hands-on experience of leading projects through lead optimization and development candidate nomination is strongly preferred.
  • Experience leading and managing chemistry teams in a matrix organization, and also direct experience of hiring, managing and developing direct reports.
  • Ability to effectively collaborate and drive towards scientific goals in a dynamic, cross-functional matrix environment.
  • Proven ability to analyze complex multi-dimensional data, generate conclusions and recommend next steps.
  • Able to help shape inter-disciplinary strategies and initiatives
  • Experience leading external chemistry teams at CRO’s is highly desirable.
  • Confident leader and communicator (verbal and written) with a highly collaborative interaction style.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects/ initiatives in a fast-paced environment.
